Lawsuit filed! I want my money back!!!
by mtnbarbie ,Jul 22 '04
Pros: uhhhh... I'm still thinking Cons: Not enough room to list, see my comments.
This machine was the most expensive piece of junk I have eve been suckered into purchasing. I don't want to spoil anyone on the "calypso wash" motion, but Whirlpool left this thing so full of flaws I would be afraid to wash my baby's diapers in it. It has ruined hundreds of dollars worth of my family's clothing by leaving gray spots and grease marks on the fabric, and many items would work their way below the basket only to get twisted and torn in the drive shaft. I thought my family had really been suckered by Whirlpool until I learned of the CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT pending against them from the hundreds of people that have had the same bad experience as I have. I guess there is light at the end of this tunnel (As long as I get my money back). Bottom line --- steer clear of this hunk of junk.

This machine ruins clothes!!!!
by jim77215 ,Mar 11 '05
Pros: energy efficient I guess Cons: can streak your clothes and ruin them!
It's true. We've been having these mysterious streaks and stains appear on some of our color clothing after we wash our clothes. It looks like bleach streaks to me. They don't come out and the clothes our basically ruined.

Budget for repairs!!
by johntenney ,Dec 26 '04
Pros: Quiet, simple interface. Cons: Not durable, will need repairs.
We have a two person household using this washing machine and after two years of moderate use it has needed repairs. Consumer Reports gave this machine a good review, but has somewhat changed their report as of late.
We're stuck with a fairly new washing machine that has been getting bad press and we cannot sell in good faith without warning the potential buyer of it's poor durability.
Way to go Whirlpool!

Clothes dirty after washing
by sausalito ,Feb 08 '05
Pros: Quiet, easy loading, looks nice Cons: Dirty laundry, black stains, bleach stains, long cycle.
We bought this product because it was advertised as environmentally friendly and had good reviews in Consumer's Report at the time.
I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong until I read the reviews here. Clothes come out with black dirt in wrinkles, especially when using Hand wash or Delicate. I can get the stains off if I hand wash my clothes right after the machine wash. I didn't realize that my fancy expensive towels could look awful after just a year because of the washer - I was blaming the towel manufacturer. Stopped using bleach because of bleach stains on towels and sweatshirts. Using HE soap didn't make any difference.
We had electrical problem within the first few months (under warranty), couldn't get anyone to come and look at it for couple of weeks, then had to wait for the part and schedule another appointment to install the part. Couldn't use the washer for maybe a month. There was no apology as we were dealing with the manufacturer. Can we join the class action?

GREAT WASHER, BUT READ IF YOU HAVE LD (long drain) DISPLAY
by grand-ma-ma ,Apr 09 '06
Pros: Super cleaning, quiet, energy & water efficient Cons: New way of washing can be difficult to get used to
I have used this washer constantly for the past 3 years and have experienced the LD (long drain) problem mentioned in the other reviews. The service man came out to fix the machine and he could find nothing wrong either. I was at my wits end, since I really liked this machine, but couldn't solve this knotty problem. Then I realized that I did not install this machine with the hoses that came with it, but rather used "better" stainless steel burst proof hoses. I removed one of these hoses from the water source and compared it to the Whirlpool hoses and noticed that its inside diameter was much smaller, even though all demensions looked the same on the outside. Well, I replaced the stainless steel hoses with the Whirlpool ones and I have not had another LD reading in more than 2 1/2 years. I will keep a watchful eye on this machine because of all the bad reviews, but basically I like it very much. It's quiet, does a super washing job, and is very energy efficient. My previous machine was a Maytag from hell, so perhaps I've done my lemon time.

calypso sucks
by bookworm36 ,Oct 15 '04
Pros: You can do 2 sleeping bags at a time. Cons: It only lasted 3 years.
Mine lasted 3 years and Sears would only give me $500 towards a new one. I paid over $1300.00! DON'T Get this one.
I bought it because of the large capacity. I hate it.

DO NOT BUY
by turbine ,Feb 22 '05
Pros: NONE Cons: HAVING TO WAIT ON GETTING MACHINE WORKED ON AGAIN AND AGAIN.
I HAVE MY MACHINE WORKED ON FIVE (5) TIMES AND HAVE ANOTHER WORK REQUEST IN NOW ON THIS MACHINE. IT HAS DAMAGED CLOTHES. I HAVE THE WATER PUMP CHANGED TWICE, TWO BOARDS CHANGED TWICE AND HAD TO HAVE THE BLEACH AREA RESEALED TO STOP GETTING BLEACH ONTO OTHER CLOTHES.

The Calypso sucks (literally)
by mensch_1 ,Jun 10 '05
Pros: The class action lawsuit will hopefully provide relief eventually, as the Neptune lawsuit did. Cons: Do not waste your money on the failed experiment called Calypso.
I have given up on this machine. Along with the moldy smells, the streaking, and the generally poor cleaning job, our machine is now sucking our clothes down under the wash plate. This machine is a joke.

I love mine
by z4suz ,Sep 01 '05
Pros: Love the looks, ease of use, and low water usage Cons: Can't think of a single thing negative about this.
I bought the Calypso washer/dryer set in April 2004 and loved it right away. Then, I bought my son and his wife a set. None of us have had a problem with ours. I always use HE soap and this thing cleans everything I put in it. I'm truly surprised at all the negative comments. I'm moving this month and my biggest disappointment is that I can't take this set with me.

Terrible waste of money
by shonim ,Apr 25 '05
Pros: It's pretty. Cons: Leaks, smells, breaks down, eats your clothes...doesn't clean them.
We bought this washer with the general rule in mind that paying top dollar for something meant that you actually got a top quality product. Boy, were we wrong with the Calypso.
The machine is certainly attractive, no doubt, but looks (as we all know) can be deceiving.
Even with proper maintenance, following rules of thumb, and use of preferred products (HE detergent), the machine has never gotten my clothes as clean as the 15 year old dinosaur I used prior. I thought I'd done something wrong, to have my clothes smell like mold all the time, to come out with 'greasy' spots. The washer leaked all over the floor for no apparent reason, as though it had been too full. We've replaced the pump twice, and are awaiting our third this Wednesday. Our washer just turned 3 years old. All this, and the machine is so advanced that we have to go through Sears/Kenmore/Whirlpool directly to have it serviced...and pay top dollar once again.
In all, I have been happier with hand-me-down dinosaurs than I am with this beast.
I'd suggest anyone thinking about buying one, to think again....and again...and then buy something else.

Should have thrown my money in the street would have been less painful
by majorb ,Mar 09 '08
Pros: Looks ok in laundry room. Cons: Dingy whites, won't stay level.
The absolute biggest piece of junk - I need my head examined I actually have two , one in primary home and one that came with second home we purchased. Where do I start? Rust on new shirts, shredded towels, dingy, dingy whites! Sears should be giving everybody their money back with a BIG apology. Would beat my clothes on a rock on a river before I used one of these again!

Don't believe the bad hype...
by arb1971 ,Aug 01 '05
Pros: Great stain remover & water saver Cons: Heavy to move
I've read all the bad reviews on this washer & don't agree at all. I think it's great, I've owned it for about 6 months now & haven't had 1 problem with it at all. Clothes come out nice & clean & removes stains well. I got this machine for a bargain price of $439 at a Sears Discount Outlet.

calypso washer is not good !!
by maryedwards ,Mar 12 '05
Pros: it looks good Cons: too many bad things about this washer to mention in 15 words
Bought the Calypso Washer in August of 2002. He wanted the best one (or so he thought). It has never washed clothes as good as I think it should have. I have had many of the same problems that the previous reviewers have, and now this morning, I'm getting a CE error message. The only thing in the manual is to hit the stop/cancel button and start it again. It keeps doing the same thing, so I guess I'm in for a costly repair now, or may just decide to get a different washer at this point. If I would have known, I would have gone with a less expensive washer without all the bells and whistles that would have worked better and longer than this one. The last washer lasted for many years before any mechanical problems at all.

Calypso damages all fabrics!
by melcarr ,Sep 29 '05
Pros: None Cons: See above
We bought our machine last Spring when we moved because we wanted to conserve energy & water. This machine has ruined thousands of dollars worth of clothing and household items (tablecloths, napkins, sheets & towels). There are gray/light black streaks all over everything when they come out of the washer. The spots don't come out even when bleached. Brand new expensive towels had pulled threads after the first washing. It's faulty, it's horrible and without a doubt, the worst appliance I've ever purchased. They should all be recalled it's such a disgrace.
