Top load calypso washer stains
by dgfoos2003 ,Feb 19 '06
Pros: Ease of use, large load capacity, cleans cloths like wool and silk normally dry cleaned. Cons: Recent staining of clothing.
We have had this washer for 5 years, and have loved it until now. The wool and hand wash features on it have been very cool. We paid just over $1000 for it when we bought it and expect it to last at least 10-15 years. We have just recently began experiencing the stains which appear as gray streaks and a few other unexplainable things like musty smell, and dingy whites.
We have had minimal problems with it prior to the recent months and have required minimal maintenance on it. The extended warranty is now expired, so my husband is taking it apart to identify where the problem is and see if we can correct it. I was really fed up with it and was ready to buy another one, but with what I'm reading on the internet, it seems several HE washers are having issues which may be due to the way it is being used. If we get this machine working again, I will love it again.
We plan to clean the fabric softener/bleach compartment, replace the rusty clamps with stainless steel, and replace the water supply lines.

Total Crap!
by thatsme99 ,Jul 22 '06
Pros: Uses little water Cons: too many to list
At this point the word is probably already out everywhere what a piece of crap this set is!! I bought it at Sears 3 years ago and is the worst washer/dryer I've every owned. All that money for a washer that doesn't clean, leaves stains, doesn't even fully wet ribbed clothing such as sweaters. The dryer went bad last year to the tune of $600 repair (which luckily I had an extended warranty). Tomorrow I am going to buy a new washer/dryer and it will NOT be at Sears!!!!

Only Headaches!
by padley1 ,Apr 06 '06
Pros: Quiet, many options, good design. Cons: Durability, repair cost.
Purchased new in 2001. Repaired twice. Now on third repair with an estimate of $511.74. This item should be recalled, but Sears keeps ducking. A class action lawsuit was filed.
Seems to wash fine when working. Now has been sitting for 2 weeks full of water. It is a quiet machine. Options galore (maybe part of the problem).
They might have revamped today's models but I have lost respect for the Kenmore name.

bad, bad, bad - don't buy!
by doug7654 ,Feb 11 '07
Pros: Easy settings, big basket, min. water use Cons: Frequent expensive repair
We've had this washer for about 3 years. It's been serviced several times. A dime in your pocket will end up in the pump requiring the service guy to come.
Now it's out of balance always. Turns out the basket has come loose - it costs $200 and the u-joint below it would cost $300 to be repaired!

DO NOT BUY CALYPSO WASHING MACHINE
by static796 ,Jun 18 '08
Pros: NONE Cons: Buyer Beware consumers are getting RIPPED!
Clothes smelled soured had repair man out. Did not fix the issue. Couldn't afford another machine so we settled for a CHEAP washing machine. Obtained documentation for lawsuit settlement to get another washer and they tell us we do not meet the criteria. Sears has the documentation on repair and would not release it. So now we are stuck with a cheap washing machine that works almost as bad as the calypso. Why cant anyone make things right?

Beware of Repair Costs
by greginky ,Apr 22 '05
Pros: controls Cons: reliability, value
We have had our Calypso washer and dryer for a couple of years, with average performance for each. Recently, washer quit draining with (Long Drain) code. Determined that a heavy piece of yarn got sucked into the pump and jammed the impeller and also wrapped around the shaft, no way to get to it! Whirlpool in their infinite wisdom, decided to require to replace the pump with a unit requiring me to by the motor as well! Instead of $30 for a pump, I had to spend $115 for the pump and motor! Beware! I have had problems with dryer as well but will save that for another review. Research before buying a Calypso! There are other sites with more graphic details on problems!!!

Beware! Do your research!
by simba1025 ,Jul 12 '05
Pros: Large Capacity, I'll give it that Cons: Doesn't wash well, moldy smell, and defective parts. Broken in 6 months.
I wish I had done my research! I'm now stuck with a $850 washing machine that will probably need repairs for a long time to come. I'm on my first service call after owning it for 6 months. It's leaking water and is giving an error message LD, which means long drain. If you do a search on Whirlpool Calypso Washer Complaints, you will find a good bit of information. Not to mention there is a MOLDY smell to my cloths. You can smell it in the washer. If you let the clothes sit in there for an hour or two, they will smell like mold. Which to me means the clothes aren't getting clean. Please remember, I've only had this washer for 6 months and I have read several other similar complaints. Just do your research.

Highly Disappointed
by montanakellie ,Nov 01 '04
Pros: Easy to use Cons: Noisy
My Calypso is not even a year old and I hate it!! It does not clean the clothes very well, sometimes I have to wash them twice. It leaves fabric softener on the clothes and when dry, is highly visible on dark clothes. It has left rust marks on my clothes and long fade marks that are permanent.
Believe me, DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS ONE!!

New Technology gone awry
by loistate ,Jun 02 '04
Pros: When it worked, I thought it did a superior job of cleaning clothes. Cons: Too expensive to buy and repair. The bugs are not worked out on this machine.
After 2 1/2 years, my Calypso began sucking things like socks and dye sheets through the pump. It actually sucked a set of sheets so completely that we couldn't pull them out. The items were getting pulled through the crack between the tub wall and the wash plate's outer rim. After 2 service calls from a non authorized appliance technician and $333, it was still doing the same thing. I talked to Whirlpool, who denied of ever hearing of such a problem (yeah, right) and arranged for an authorized tech to come out. He estimated repairs to be $500. Forget it. I am hoping to recover some of the $333 from the tech who was obviously not qualified to work on this machine. Other than that, I am screwed. Whirlpool isn't interested in my problem...so I bought a Maytag.

Stay Away
by lessm ,Oct 18 '04
Pros: Pretty Machine Cons: Poor washing performance
We have had spots on our cloths since we got this washer. Also, as others state the cloths come out very wrinkled, whites are not clean and bright. Go with standard technology washers....sure wish we had.

Whirlpool Calypso Washer should be pulled from market
by badwasher ,Aug 07 '05
Pros: Looks nice and does a decent job on hand wash cycle. Cons: twists clothes, tears clothes, rinses poorly, leaves soap residue,
I am 66 years old and have owned many washers. I have owned the Whirlpool Calypso washer for almost two years and I have hated it from the first load. Because of the high cost, I have tried to make it work for my family but I am giving up and shopping for a replacement this week. The Calypso twists clothes, doesn't rinse properly, tears holes in clothes and every towel and wash cloth I own has threads pulled loose and hanging. If you are considering buying this washer, you would be very wise to choose a different model. I only wish I had read these reviews two year ago, it would have saved me from the nightmare that my Calypso has been.

DO NOT BUY
by shushpls ,Oct 07 '05
Pros: It is a very quiet machine. Cons: This machine is very harsh on your clothes.
I've had my machine for exactly 6 months. One day it just stopped working. In a matter of 7 days I had 4 service calls. A couple of times the tech got it to work. But I was only able to run 1 load before the machine stopped again. I wasted a week of my time trying to get this thing working. Whirlpool was not helpful at all even though the machine is still covered by the 1 yr warranty. Finally I contacted the place I purchased it from and they agreed to take it back. I consider myself lucky to be rid of this heartache.

Let Calypso Dance to the Junkyard!
by tvcc ,Jan 04 '08
Pros: Looks attractive Cons: Shreds/pulls clothes
Doesn't get clothes very clean
Dryer takes too long to dry
I have owned many Whirlpool appliances in my fifty-five years and have enjoyed them all. This is why I did not hesitate to purchase the Calypso model when I needed a new set. The Calypso washer and dryer takes the prize for the worst piece of junk in history. The washer shreds towels and pulls clothes. The dryer takes a short eternity to dry even a small load. If Whirlpool knows of the problems with this set, why do they not compensate the consumer?

landfill addition
by edmcoo ,Jan 09 '06
Pros: sleek styling, energy rating Cons: twists clothes, and stretches them out of shape, leaves spots.
This machine has destroyed so much of my wardrobe it isn't even funny. As others have mentioned, many times it makes the clothes dirtier than when they went in. For instance a dish cloth that I had used to quickly wipe off kitchen counters before washing in hot water, with bleach, and extra rinse cycle came out with coffee grounds still clinging to it. That just isn't right!!
I will replace it with a regular , water filling, top loading machine, asap.

calypso piece of junk
by repairpro ,Sep 05 '07
Pros: top loading, excellent display, good short term Cons: breaks down, heavy repair issues
Yes, this machine worked efficiently for the first 2 years, now it is constantly breaking down from "uneven" load issues.
WE have spent more money on repairs than we paid for it new. I wouldn't have another Kenmore anything! Where are they importing their product from these days!
