Free Lawn Help
Jan 29 '00
I admit it - I am "horitculturally impaired." I used to have no clue as to what to do in the yard until I found a great source for FREE advice - the local Cooperative Extension Service. I live in North Carolina so I am sharing what I know about their services here - but I feel that most states have similar services available.
First of all you can take in a soil sample to have it analyzed at the University for free. Then you will know what chemicals you need to add to grow different plants. Once you have your soil right you are ready to start planting.
Advice, brochures, and classes are available. It is a really great service. The one here has so many different classes on landscape maintenance and even has an arboretum that you focuses strictly on native plants so that you can see what that little seedling you purchased at the garden center will look like in five years.
If you have a plant with a pest problem or disease it can be taken in and the folks there will tell you what is wrong and how to correct it. If it has to be sent off I think there is a couple of dollars charge for nematode analysis but most problems are solved in house.
Cooperative Extension in North Carolina does not exist only to help the farmers. They help the everyday homeowner with lawn problems as well. Also check out thier other services (4-H, family & consumer science, etc).
