In search of just the right cleaning products

I hate to clean. It's no secret to my family and friends. There are a lot of things I'd rather do than clean, especially my kitchen. I always seem to be on the look-out for products that make the job easier.

I have several different varieties of kitchen cleaners under my sink gathering dust. They either didn't clean well enough, stank, or made me break out in a rash.

Breaking out in a terrible rash from the chemicals prompted me to begin my search for the perfect cleaners--one that was strong enough to get rid of the grease and gentle enough on my senses.

When it came to dish soap, I pretty much relied on the standard hypoallergenic Palmolive. But, I decided to try something a little more natural.

The grocery store had Planet brand certified 100% biodegradable extra strength dishwashing liquid on sale. Being an "earth friendly" type person, this product was very appealing. This is a coconut oil based cleaner. Maybe because it is 100% biodegradable, it didn't soap up well. I had to keep reapplying it to my sponge and refilling the sink water. This particular cleaner is now part of our camping gear.

Next, I tried a variety of counter-top cleaners. Fantastic cleaned well but the odor wasn't very appealing. I gagged every time I wiped down the counters.

We moved on to Pine-Sol lemon scented all-purpose cleaner. It's cleaning power was marginal. The scent was more appealing than the Fantastic, it didn't clean as well.

My search was not going well.

Then, I happened to order something from an e-tailer that was no longer available. With my store credit, I closed my eyes and ordered Sun and Earth brand dish soap and all-purpose cleaner.

The dishwashing liquid is hypoallergenic and natural oil based and contains water and orange oil. I was skeptical. First of all, it is orange colored not clear like all the other hypoallergenic dishwashing soaps. Second, the last natural oil based dishwashing soap didn't work well.

Imagine my surprise when it soaped well and literally dissolved the grease. And, my skin didn't look like raw meat!

Let's move on to the all-purpose cleaner. The ingredients met my criteria for natural. It was almost too natural. I really doubted something made from water, coconut oil and orange oil would actually work well enough.

Shows you what I know.

I sprayed it on. I waited with my breath held. I slowly wet my sponge. Gently, I moved my sponge over my grimey stove and saw something I hadn't seen in weeks...WHITE! (OK, it wasn't really weeks, maybe a couple days but you get my point.) I didn't even have to do a second application. All it took was one spray and even the crusties from the spaghetti came off!

I moved over to the counter where I had kneaded dough. The other cleaners on this test took at least four applications to remove the stickies. The Sun and Earth cleaner only took two.

And, the scent...WOW! My three year old ran into the kitchen demanding part of the orange I was eating. I find the orange scent much more pleasant than lemon.

I'm going to see how well it performs on cleaning the floor soon, but I have it feeling it will exceed my expectations.

In summary: Sun and Earth cleaners ROCK! They are earth friendly, hypoallergenic and smell terrific!
