The Welcome-Home CasseroleApr 24 '00 Write an essay on this topic. My family is pretty spread out these days -- South Carolina, Massachusetts, and Colorado. The opportunities are few and far between for us ALL to get together at one place at one time. Christmas is usually that time, but sometimes that can't even happen. We've come to really cherish those few days a year we all can spend together, and this recipe has become the tradition for our "special" breakfast feast together. We usually have it Christmas morning, but have been known to make it for a regular night's dinner as well! There's no denying it is wonderful! I found this recipe on the John Davidson show, some 15 years ago, but it has been improved/changed a bit since then. I know you people out there are complaining about the fact there are too many recipes on epinions, but this is the only one I am posting, because I thought it a shame not to share it. Ingredients: 1 lb sausage links 8 slices bread 1/2 C shredded cheddar cheese 1/2 C shredded monterey jack cheese 4 eggs 2C milk 1/2 tsp dry mustard powder 1 can cream of mushroom soup 1/4 C vermouth Preparation: 1. Brown the sausage, cut into bit-sized pieces, and set aside. 2. Cut the bread into cubes and put them into an 8×8 in. glass baking dish. 3. Sprinkle on the cheeses and top with the sausage. 4. Mix the eggs with the milk, and add the dry mustard. Pour over the other ingredients already in the dish. 5. Mix the soup with the vermouth and pour over the other ingredients. 6. Bake uncovered at 350° for 90 minutes. If top starts to get too brown before baking time is over, then cover. Feeds 4–6. Note: All the preparation steps can be done the night before, and the dish can be held in the refrigerator overnight. Yummy! |
