My wife and I bought a wooden handled set of Farberware knives for $80 at a department store after our wedding. We didn't know the first thing about knives at the time, so we couldn't make an educated guess between $80 for a whole set of knives in a wooden block, or one $80 Henckels paring knife. A year later, I'd take the paring knife hands down!
Now, our set isn't even listed here. I'm sure Farberware either A) was too embarrassed by this product to even get any opinions on it, or B) knew the product was lousy, and discontinued it. Either way, let it be known that if you ever see such a set, sharpen your fingernails, cause they'll stay sharp longer than these knives.
Our set includes a chef's knife, paring knife, filet knife, scissors, sharpener, steak knives, and 2 others. Every time I use one of them I have to sharpen it. If I am slicing meat, I must sharpen them 2-3 times per use. If you don't sharpen these knives frequently, they can make a tomato look like a chain saw massacre. I've resorted to cutting my steak with a butter knife, rather than subject myself to a 2 minute workout prior to enjoying each bite of tenderloin.
It's a shame to throw out a perfectly good piece of wood just to keep the garbage men from hurting themselves while they dispose of these horrible knives. I'm going to begin trolling epinions for a set of knives that offers excellent value for non-professionals that like to cook. I suggest you do too!
