Choosing Color in Decorating
by Melissa_M | Jun 25 '00
Color!!! Who hasn't had a terrible time deciding if the green they want to paint the living room will look good? Or, if the pink in that pillow will look really garish in the same living room? I know I have, so, I want to share a few tips that...

Going to wear it? (Reply to this comment)

The sample/color board is a wonderful and smart idea but I don't agree with the wardrobe comment. There are many colors as well as patterns that you may not wear well, yet enjoy looking at and possibly surrounding yourself with.

I never wear red. Not only because it looks terrible with my complexion, but I prefer to blend in to a crowd, not stand out. I would never have considered hues of this color for a wall or accent colors in the past, but surprisingly have liked some of what I have seen done with it lately.

In fact Behr's recent "interior collection colors" pallet is excellent (no red's included)! May I quote from them?..."Color is pure magic. Silent music that can speak volumes about your personal style, without you saying a word. Just being around it should make you happy. And that, of course is what home is all about." Note they don't mention them having to look good on you!

I would suggest beginning with colors derived from things you love...the beach, the changing autumn leaves, your garden, the landscape after a fresh snow, chocolate, etc. If you enjoy these things, decorating your home with colors derived from them will be a constant reminder .... bringing you happiness, enjoyment and comfort!

If you don't have a large budget I also suggest keeping the big expensive items neutral colors and natural tones. Paint and accent items are much less expensive, easily changed with your tastes and enable you the opportunity to redecorate more often.

Have fun!

LOL, Helen, I'm WEARING yellow, and my hair is auburn too! Well, I've been called a redhead, but, we both know that auburn sounds SO much better! Black bedrooms? Was that during an Elvira phase? LOL

Applause coming from the woman who once painted her bedroom black... don't ask! This is a great idea and one that I will definitely use in the near future. Thanks, too, for the tip about Dutch Boy products, I look awful in yellow even with auburn hair!

Great review!
