Alright, to a certain extent, ANY serger that does the job is a great investment, even for a novice sewer. But the Baby Lock is a particularly sweet one, because it can do both basic functions and some more advanced things. I like that it has options for all sorts of stitches (2, 3, and 4 thread) so you can do more than just stitch a seam.
I myself use my serger for my cloth diaper business, and use it so often, I have several times worried about wearing it out. I really appreciate it's durability. I have only once had to do a repair, and it was easy to do myself (I broke a tension dial!) The needles are easy to replace, and projects go nice and quick. This sounds cheesey, but the manual is very cool. It is very descriptive for troubleshooting stuff, and offers helpful advice. It's a bit pricey, but a great purchase.
