Fast cooking is a must in our household. I do not want to spend hours in my kitchen anymore. First of all I do not have tons of time as I would rather spend it writing on Epinions.
Microwaves are a selective choice. What do you want to use it for? If it is to warm coffee or leftovers I would suggest a small unit with low voltage. If you want to make popcorn you will need 1000 watts. In my condo I have a small one that I purchased to heat food when we had teenagers that were hungry all the time. It served as a food warmer but not a tool to make popcorn because it is only 700 watts.
Just lately I purchased a Sharp with the rotating plate. It is an over the oven model with a fan. This is another of my favorite toys that I use everyday.
I steam tons of vegetables and use the microwave with Tupperware steamers.
You can have some great fish in 7 minutes.
For the home unit I wanted a light and a fan plus more voltage for popcorn. I have cooked turkeys in my big old Amana microwave with the meat probe and they are great. Now, I usually do not make big meals or else we have a lot of company and the Sharp is great for a fast meal in about 25 minutes I can have a baked potato and some vegetables and fish.
Prices vary on microwaves but I think of all the microwaves I prefer the Sharp that is a few years old now. I am a great believer in cooking great dinners in the least amount of time.
Biscuits and dough products are really not that great in the microwave. I would use a small toaster oven to conserve energy. When you want to bake something like brownies undercook them and they will be fine. I have made many batches of brownies cooking in about a third of the time of a conventional oven.
Microwaves should be purchased with the age of the people and what functional purpose is actually intended. I think the Sharp brand is the best because it has given me stellar sevice over the years.
