First tools-Education
Dec 02 '00
Home improvement, woodworking, light construction, what ever. The first tools a person needs are books, books and more books. Restrain from going out and purchasing a bunch of tools and machinery, before you know exactly what you intend to do. There are hundreds of different type of tools,to do different types of work. Right now,all I am going to talk about is woodworking, but it could apply to everything else. There are many sources for an informal education. Books, magazines, internet, short seminars and learning from experienced craftsmen.
First you have to focus on where you want to start. A good, first woodworking project would be a simple book case. If you lack tools,go to a lumber outlet that will mill your plywood. Or buy a hand held circular saw and a straight edge. Demension your plywood to the size desired, rip everything the same. Buy some screen moulding that will cover the edges of the plywood. Simply use butt joints, glue and nails. Another good way to get your feet wet,buy a pre-cut kit, then all you need is hand tools for assembly. Once you get started, with simple projects, simple tools and lots of reading, you will find out what hand and power tools you will need,to complete more complex projects. You can buy pre-demensioned lumber, that is already planed to consistant thicknesses. All you have to worry about is cross cutting. Start out with a hand saw, framing square and a hammer. I have completed many decent projects, with very limited tools.
Woodworking is an art. After getting into it,you will find what type you enjoy the most and probably will expand upon that. Don't let anyone else tell you what and what style you want. Its your choice, its all a matter of personal taste. $5000 worth of tools and machinery does not make a craftsman. A genuine craftsman can and will build anything when, where and how he wants, with what ever is available.
