For the last 5 years I have been trying every cosmetic cream or lotion, and medicinal or herbal remedy available for my dry and itching skin. It was at the point by this summer where I wouldn't wear tank tops, I was so embarrassed by the marks from my itching and scratching. It was concentrated on my shoulders, back and upper arms.
I thought maybe it was some medication, and played detective to no avail. Then I was convinced I was allergic to something - laundry soap, dryer softener sheets, possibly the Ivory Soap I'd used for years in the shower.....but nothing I stopped taking, nor used topically, had any effect.
Anyone who has dealt with this knows that it can really be more than a minor annoyance. This was almost disfiguring, with the marks from scratching, even some scarring.
This fall, as I was again self-consciously saying to my chiropractor, "I guess I still haven't figured out what I'm allergic to", knowing my back was full of scratches, he asked me a question.
He said, "you do take Omega 3 oil, don't you?" I told him I'd tried it a couple years ago, for arthritis and the itching, but the fishy smell and taste turned me off. He said, "well, take Flax Seed Oil instead - it works just as well". He felt quite sure that was the problem - that my system was lacking in the Omega 3 and Omega 6 oils, which are also important for numerous other nutritional needs. I started taking 3 tablets per day of 1000 mg. Flax Seed Oil. It does contain the Omega 3, 6 and 9 oils. From the 2nd or 3rd day, the itching has stopped. Not just diminished --- it has stopped completely! It also comes in a liquid form, to mix in with any food, but the tablets are much easier to take, and have no taste at all.
If only I had known this before I actually created actual scars on my back and arms from the dry skin.....but finally finding THE solution to something that I thought had no solution - for me anyway, has been nothing short of a miracle. I have since talked to other women with the same problem. It's almost something we don't feel comfortable talking about, if we suffer from it. And according to my MD and my chiropractor, the answer almost always lies in an internal cure, if it is something that is year-round, and not just from certain foods, medications, soaps - it is a lack of the appropriate balance of oil in my system. The relief, emotionally and physically is something I'd almost given up on experiencing. If you've gone down this path yourself, I would sincerely recommend starting to take Flax Seed Oil. It has worked - period.
