What Not to Buy: Central Vac Built-In Vacuum System

Apr 04 '00 (Updated Sep 13 '00)

If you have ever dreamed about how wonderful it would be to have a built-in vacuum system in your house, dream on. When I bought my house, it was equipped with this device. At first I thought that it would be a great convenience, but I was wrong.

The first problem with a built-in system is the fact that it isn't as powerful as a regular vacuum. To me, it seems to have power equivalent to a dust buster. The further that you get away from the motor, the less power it seems to have.

The next problem for me is the plastic hose. As you are vacuuming the hard plastic hose drags behind. In my case, it must drag over hard wood floors in many places, causing scratches on the floor.

Also, it is no more convenient to drag the hose upstairs than it is to drag a vacuum cleaner upstairs. At least the vacuum cleaner is less bulky.

I understand that these units cost about $1000 installed. You would be better off buying a traditional vacuum cleaner and taking a vacation with the left over money. In my opinion, this system is a waste of money.
