Keep Your Money--it's Not Worth it
Jan 19 '00
Appliance warranties are not worth the high prices that are charged, which increase every year you own the appliance. Most appliances are guaranteed for the first year anyway, and if something is going to go wrong, it probably will be during the first year.
Follow the manufacturers advice on care and maintenance of your appliance, such as cleaning the dust vents under your refrigerator. This can save needless calls to the repairman.
Don't abuse your appliance--use it for what it was intended.
For instance, your vacuum cleaner shouldn't be used to clean the wood shavings in the garage. Get a vacuum meant for that kind of work--a shop vac.
Clean or replace the filter regularly (air conditioner, air cleaner, water filter, furnace). Dust and dirt will cause your appliance to work inefficiently, which will use more batteries, raise your electric bill, etc.
The few dollars you spend on a new filter is peanuts compared to what the repairman will charge.
Keep your freezer full--it's more efficient. Fill plastic containers with water if you need to, in order to keep the freezer filled. Buy extra bread and freeze it. Check the temperature to be sure it is cold enough--that includes your refrigerator, too.
All these ideas will prevent calling a repairman and make an extended warranty unnecessary.
