Great review!!
I just noticed it after all this time here as a member! Very informative, as always!!
And speaking or air conditioners, I just got a big powerful monster 10,000-BTU Whirlpool unit for the living room yesterday!!
I'm sitting in total air conditioned comfort right now, while it's well over 90 and very torrid, hot, oppressive and muggy outside! Nice!!
Thanks for the much-needed advice!!

I have just bought an air conditioning unit for my house and I can't thank you enough for the fantastic and informative advice in your article "Ten tips on buying a new air conditioner". I live in the UK but the info worked equally well here Thanks Allan.

I don't understand (Reply to this comment)

I'm really confused. I can't imagine a house or a apartment not coming with central air. Of course, I live in Texas so it's a completely different ball game. :-)
Still, a very informative "how to" guide.

Re: Electricity Rates... (Reply to this comment)

Oops... I am a little late replying to this comment, sorry.
Yes, except in California, my 25-cent rate is high. However, the rate you need to use for AC units is the peak summer rate with surcharges, not the average rate. After all, most of the US does not need AC in winter. I picked 25 cents because it made the sums easy to follow. Everyone should work out their own rate to get realistic figures for their area.

A great read (Reply to this comment)

We need some air conditioners this year. The house we bought is 112 years old and not conducive to central air. I am also pregnant so going without air is not an option. This opinion gave us alot of guidance. Great details and great overview.

Electricity Rates... (Reply to this comment)
by cowboyind
Other than some spikes in Southern California before the state capped their rates at 7 or 8 cents per kw/h, no normal residential customer in the country pays 25 cents per kw/h. The highest rates are charged by Con. Ed. in New York and they average 16 cents per kw/h.
