Crockin Good Food!

Written: Dec 29 '00
Pros:Great Food, Energy Savings
Cons:Big to Store

This Rival slow cooker is the second one I've owned in 20 years. I still have the first, which is the smaller more vertical version and it is still in fine working order. I asked for this second one as a gift because the smaller version just wasn't meeting all my crocking needs.

This new oval cooker is great! Most anything will fit into it including larger roasts, and whole chickens. My favorite thing to use the cooker for is slow cooking a whole chicken until the meat falls right off the bone. This holiday season I also made Chex party mix using the cooker and the results were great. The pot cooks the moisture out of the mix better than the oven method.

You don't have to be a gourmet cook to use this appliance though it is good to have one or two slow cooker recipe books on hand to get a feel for ingredients and timing. You will receive a small recipe book with your cooker that will help you get started.

You don't have to be a technology whiz to operate this appliance either. Pretty simple, Off, Low, High. Those controls are the same as my 20 year old version. I guess if it works then there is no sense in changing it.

If you are a spur of the moment person, don't buy a crock pot. To use this appliance you will need to plan ahead as most meals need to cook at least 5 hours.

Clean up is not a problem. The dish can be removed and fits with a little bit of struggle into my dishwasher as does the lid. Wipe down the outer heating portion and you've got it made.

I would recommend a Rival brand slow cooker to anyone in the market. Get this larger one only if you have room to store it. Otherwise, the smaller versions are nice to have as well.

Bon Appetit'
