The Holiday Season is upon us, and dreary winter approaches just after like an icy freight train. My own personal tradition in past years has been to use the holiday feasting to add a few extra layers of insulation, and then hibernate until spring. But not this year. If you've seen my review of the Ballston Sport & Health Club, you'll know that I'm trying to shed pounds this time around, partly through exercise, but also by improving my diet.
That means increased salad intake. Without any rabbits in my traceable ancestry, however, I need a bit of dressing on my salads. And if you've ever read the label on a bottle of salad dressing, it's no surprise to you that they're about as fat-free as Marlon Brando. Low cal? Forget it. The words "low cal" or "lite," when it comes to salad dressing, are a notch below "flavored sewage" and one notch above "untreated sewage." And it's even worse if, like me, your favorite dressing is bleu cheese. The low cal varieties, almost without exception, taste like a biology project gone horribly wrong. (No, that's the container in the *back* of the fridge.)
I did say, "almost." That's because I've discovered a "lite" dressing, but not just a lite dressing, a lite "Blue Cheese" dressing, that actually tastes good. Ken's Steakhouse brand Lite Chunky Blue Cheese dressing is not only edible, not only tasty, but you'll be going back for seconds on the romaine, maybe even thirds. Yeah, they don't know how to spell "bleu cheese" but they sure know how to bottle it.
I was amazed when I first tasted it. I could not tell it was the reduced calorie version. I wondered if the labels had gotten mixed. But it tasted just like the real thing. Now, keep in mind, even the "lite" version of bleu cheese is still a little heavy - 70 calories per serving, and 6 grams of fat - but if it keeps you eating somewhat-healthy salads instead of a double helping of mashed potatoes and gravy, then that's called progress.
Bon appetit!
