What NOT to put into your microwave..

Apr 08 '00

If your are anything like me and not the best cook in the world, this is an item you can not live without. I have had two different microwaves in the last 10 years. Both for me have been good ,very simple in style and size and features. Depending on what you plan to use your microwave for there are a few features you should look into.

You want to make sure you buy one large enough to perform any tasks you may want to use in it. No way can I defrost a turkey in my little microwave. Wattage is another important thing to look for. The higher the wattage the faster your food will cook. You may want a turntable in your microwave to rotate your food so it cooks evenly. Both of mine never had that so I am forced to turn the food myself( Oh that can be a real pain if you forget like i have. Half of my microwave pizza is to over cooked the other half still frozen). My microwaves had simple features, just cook and defrost. Many others have advanced cooking features. Mine both had the manual dial timers. Most all though today have the touch pad timers with built in clock.

Here are a few things you DO NOT want to put in your microwave.

DO NOT operate the oven empty.
DO NOT attempt to dry your clothes in the microwave or any newspapers or other materials that can catch on fire.
If you do have a fire turn off the timer and leave the door closed and unplug or shut off the circuit breaker to your kitchen.
DO NOT use metal containers or dishes with metal rims or any metal twist ties.
DO NOT use sealed jars or any bottles with tops on. They may shatter.
Make sure to remove any plastic store wraps before you cook or defrost anything in the oven.
DO NOT try and boil eggs in the microwave they will explode.( I know this has happened to me)
Make sure to poke holes in anything with skin like potatoes or apples or they can burst.
Make sure you stir any liquids before you heat them or they can erupt.

These are just a few tips for you when using your microwave. I hope this helps some one not to make some of the mistakes I have made. Enjoy your microwave as much as i do and KEEP SMILING :)
