Submission For Chili Writeoff
Oct 13 '00
This is part of the Chili Write Off. The host of this write of is Epinions member orator. This is my first write off so I am pretty excited.
Please take a moment to read some great chili recipes from the other writers in this Chili Write Off. They are as follows:
cligon, elorraine, ginzo, monkeyhoot, ryguy, skygirl, yyvonne, psugrowler, and of course orator.
When I decided to do this write off the first that crossed my mind is what kind of chili recipe would I do. Would I make it unusual, adding all types of different beans, or meats? Or would I keep it basic? I have been throwing chili together for years and it has always come out pretty good. So I decided to throw a pot of chili together last night and then write down the ingredients as I went along. This is a basic chili recipe, nothing real fancy. I will tell you though that when I do make chili I make a lot so if you have a large family this is a great recipe for you. If you have a small family invite someone over or freeze the additional servings for another meal.
The use of a crock pot or slow cooker is not totally necessary for this recipe but, I think you will find that most combined foods taste much better after slow cooking together for a few hours.
With no further ado, here it is my chili recipe:
Msmorvay’s Throw It Together Chili
1 ½ pounds of ground beef
1 onion (chopped as desired)
1 green pepper (chopped as desired)
2 6 0z cans tomato paste
1 14 ½ oz can of diced tomatoes
2 cans of mexican style chili beans
1 cup of water
8 oz can tomato sauce
1 teaspoon basil
1 teaspoon parsley flakes
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion salt
½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
2 tablespoons chili powder
2 dashes of Tobasco sauce (add more if you like it HOT)
Add ground beef and onion to frying pan and brown the meat and drain, add all of the ingredients to a crockpot or slow cooker. Set on low and allow to simmer for a good 4 hours.
Pretty simple huh?
Like I said a crock pot is not necessary if you don’t have the time to slow cook the chili or you don’t have a crock pot you can add all of the ingredients to a large sauce pan and let it simmer on a low heat for at least 15 minutes, but preferably for ½ hour. Don’t forget to stir frequently.
Tip: You can make your own packaged chili seasoning by taking all of the dry ingredients above and putting them in a plastic baggie. That way whenever you want to make chili in a hurry you already have the seasoning ready to pour in.
Tip: Don’t forget how great chili is served over rice or spaghetti noodles with a little shredded cheese on top. Mmmm Mmmm.
Well I hope you enjoy this easy and hearty chili recipe and don’t forget you can get more great chili recipes by reading the other write off participants mentioned above.
Stay warm and take care.
