HomeHome and GardenAir ConditionersShould I Buy an Appliance Warranty?

Think about it

Let me just start out by telling you a little something I am frustrated with right now. We bought a vacuum cleaning a few months ago from a well known store (Wards) and bought a warranty to go with it that is supposed to cover it for 2 years (meaning service, parts and so forth). Well a few weeks ago I found out this store is going out of business! AGH! That makes me so mad. Now what are we going to do when our expensive vacuum cleaner breaks down?

Anyway, now that I got that out of my system I will make my small point. I believe buying a warranty is a great thing. If your appliance breaks down then you can go get it fixed without forking out tons of money from your bank account. There is nothing more irritating than having something like your fridge break down and you cannot afford to fix it. In that situation you just have to find the money or you are basically screwed. Nothing like having to take out a loan to fix something you never thought you would have to.

Yet, there are other situations where a warranty is not needed. Like take my family for instance. We are military and a lot of times when we buy an appliance the store will ask us "do you want a warranty to go with it?" and we will say, well not really because who knows where we will be if this thing ever breaks down and we don't know if you will have a store where we are at that time. It puts us in an akward situation. Take for instance when we bought our couch. The man who sold it to us tried to talk us into getting a paper that stated we could come in and get it cleaned if something ever got on it and so on. Well we stood there like, do you really think we are ever going to need this? And if so where will we be at that time and do you have a store in any other town? Well they didn't have a store except anywhere but here, so we declined his offer.

My recommendation to everyone is to think about what you are getting yourself into. Some warranties are pricey and you have to do a lot of thinking about if you can afford it, and if you will need it down the road.
