extended warranties

On appliances, I feel they really are not necessary, by the time the warranty kicks in on the equipment, you have paid replacement cost over all the years you've had it! I am on my 3rd home and only once have I had a problem with an appliance after 1 year (unless the appliance died in the 12th year, at $100/yr, I could have bought 3 dishwashers!)
Of course this is a "gamble" but if you totaled up all the costs for extended warranties on stoves, dishwashers, and refrigerators, you are ahead after just one year!
For small pieces of equipment such as boomboxes, don't bother. They are so inexpensive they are disposable nowadays! I hate to say it but we are in a disposable world. Even televisions are now "disposable." You can get a low end color tv for less than $200 now, even with a VCR in it!
I recommend the extended warranty on computers and their equipment, THEY WILL break! For $99 for 1-2 years, more for on site, purchase it, guaranteed the equipment will have problems. For printers and scanners, they are very reasonable ($10-$40 and to me are insurance, make sure it begins AFTER warranty is over.)
To cost this out, just get a calculator and figure out what you'll spend over 2-3 years on the equipment and decide for yourself. (it's like having a deductible of $100, $250, or $500 on your insurance, just think it out logically.)
