The Absolutely BEST Pizza Dough
Sep 05 '00
We all love pizza, but don't you agree that if the dough isn't the BEST, then the pizza can be a disappointment?!?. Well this simple recipe for pizza dough is the best I have found, and even if you think it is just too hard to make your own dough, you'll be surprised at how easy it is to make when you follow this recipe.
Ingredients:
2 Tbsp. Dry Baking Yeast
1&1/4 Cup Warm Water
1 Tsp. Sugar or Honey
1/4 Cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
1 Tsp. Salt
2&1/2 Cup Unbleached White Flour
1 Cup Whole Wheat Flour
Dissolve the yeast in the water, mix in the sugar or honey and oil. Let sit until it begins to bubble. Meanwhile, place the flours and salt in a very large mixing bowl. Blend the bubbling yeast mixture into the flour until it begins to form a ball. Remove from the bowl and knead on a floured board until smooth and elastic. Let rise in the bowl in a warm place until double in size (1 & 1/2 hours). Punch down and knead again for a few minutes to make the dough easy to handle. Divide in half for thick crust, or into thirds for thinner crust. Stretch into a circle, then roll out to the size for your pizza pan. Place on the pan which has been lightly dusted with cornmeal. Pinch the edges and pre-bake the dough at 400 degrees until it is cooked, but do not let it brown. Remove from the oven and add sauce, cheese and desired toppings. Bake the topped pizza 10 to 15 minutes or until the cheeses are bubbly.
Some of my favorite pizzas are made with vegies and a white sauce base. You can use any mixture of zucchini, spinach, broccoli, carrot, onions, peppers, and mushrooms. Cover the pizza with a thick (bechamel) white sauce, add the thin cut vegies and top with cheese. Bake as directed above and enjoy!
Of course, you can also top this pizza dough with the traditional red sauce, meats, and cheeses of your choice. Try it and you will see this is the BEST pizza dough!
