These bags are the best! I use the gallon and quart size for a variety of things and they never let me down. The interlocking zipper closure is really water tight. They have a white area on each bag that you can write on with a felt-tip marker so contents can be labeled and dated This is great for food that you freeze and can't really identify so easily later. Also great for nuts, bolts and washers that my husband keeps and which have a system of sizing and naming that still eludes me!
Cooking:
Freezer storage is the obvious use for these bags but try them out as microwave steamers. I own a couple of steamers and have switched to these freezer bags for steaming fresh vegetables. You simply clean and trip your veggies and place them into the gallon-sized bag. Spray a little olive oil onto the veggies, if you have some, seal the bag and microwave. Couldn't be easier! And when they're done, you just throw the bag away…no clean up! Vegetable servings for up to 4 work well, more than that usually requires more conventional steaming. For servings up to 4, microwave for 2-3 minutes (start with 2 and add additional 30 second blasts as needed). I use this method exclusively for broccoli, green beans, asparagus, brussels sprouts, pea pods, etc. I usually seal the bags closed tightly for this. However, veggies that produce a lot of gas (like broccoli) may build up pressure inside the bag causing it to pop open before cooking is complete. If this is an issue, leave a 1" area of the zipper open to act as a vent. When cooking is complete, remember: the inside of the bag contains hot steam. Use care in opening so you don't burn your fingers!
Travelling:
I travel a lot and use these sturdy bags to hold containers of liquids like shampoo, conditioner, facial cleanser, etc. If the container lids leak (due to pressurization levels in airline baggage holds), the liquid stays in the bag and never gets onto my clothes. I also use them to help organize things so that unpacking is quick and easy (cosmetics in one, medications in another, hubbie's shaving and other items in another, etc.). I always pack an extra, empty bag (they take up no room) in case I have a wet or damp item (swimsuit for instance) to pack on the return trip. . They are also incredibly useful for stashing receipts in an organized manner when travelling on business--expense reporting is quicker later! I have even been know to shove unpaid bills into one before leaving on a trip. When I pay the bills from the road, the receipts and other paperwork "to file" return with me in the bag.
For day trips these bags are also great! They keep tissues clean and dry at the beach. They're great for taking extra batteries with you and for bringing used CD and Walkman batteries home(our batteries ALWAYS die when we are at the beach!). They keep small items easier to organize and find in a tent. They hold pieces of toys, games, and gear that always seem to come off when you are away and need "re-attachment" when you return home.
We're brand loyal to Ziploc freezer bags at our house. Give them a try!
