best default wedding present

I love my rice cooker and use it all the time! I'd call it a necessity if you do a lot of stir frying or Chinese cooking, because using it frees up a stove burner.
But even if you don't cook in that style, it's a great appliance. Brown rice is as easy as white rice (just takes a bit longer). That part of your meal is taken care of, and you don't have to think about it. Most any rice cooker beyond the very cheapest will have a "keep-warm" feature, so the rice will wait for you.
I've given a rice cooker many times for a wedding present. It's something I know will be useful and handy, but it's likely the couple doesn't already have one. Plus, they aren't that expensive! There are models that get very fancy indeed, but a simple rice cooker will probably do most Western folks just fine.
