| klgarner's Full Review: Mill's Pride Kitchen Cabinets |
When we bought our first house last fall, we were long-time renters who had never so much as applied a coat of paint. Things sure have changed since then.
Our new house was not in terrible disrepair, but we all agreed that the existing kitchen cabinets (original to the house, approx. 17 yrs old) had to go. Since we could not both afford new cabinets and afford to pay a contractor to install them, we decided to do it ourselves. We picked the Mill's Pride cabinets, sold exclusively at Home Depot, because they were just about the best price around for new cabinetry. Home Depot will help you design your new kitchen for free, with their computer aided kitchen program. About 85% of the cabinetry line is usually in stock, with the rest (specialty cabinet sizes, crown molding, etc) available as a special order.
Ripping out the old cabinets was more than a little scary at first, but thanks to Mill's Pride easy instructions and illustrations, we were soon assembling and attaching the new cabinets with ease. They even have a video, price is refundable with cabinet purchase, that shows how to completely dismantle the old kitchen, and put it back together again. Actually, these cabinets were among some of the easiest things I have ever put together in my life. The locking cam system holds them together securely, and they are extremely strong and sturdy.
All of the Mill's Pride cabinets are made of 3/4" thick particleboard, and the doors are varying combinations of solid wood and veneer, depending on which style you pick. We chose to go with the Hartford Maple line, which has a 3/4" thick solid maple door frame with an arched veneer center. Again, the prices vary depending which door style is chosen, but all are extremely reasonable. Home Depot seems to run a recurring special, buy 10 cabinets and get the sink base for free. The sink base usually runs about $150 - $200 so this is a great deal.
We ended up spending less than 2K to completely replace all the cabinets in our kitchen, and by doing it ourselves, we saved about the same amount. We did hit some snags along the way, but everything was fairly easily resolved.
The best thing about these kitchen cabinets is that they are warranted for life. I did have a quality issue with one cabinet door, and by a quick phone call to Mill's Pride 800 number, I had a new door shipped to me very promptly. They were extremely helpful and knowledgeable about installation issues. I would not hesitate to purchase Mill's Pride cabinets again, I am thrilled with how they look and perform.
