FIRST YOU JUMP UP AND DOWN ON THE MATTRESS...
Nov 11 '00
To see if you can touch the ceiling like when you were kids to see if the box springs will break and fall through the frame setup; then if that’s ok, then you take a nap and see if you wake up with an aching back. If it were only that easy to buy a mattress.
What you first need to determine is if it’s a new mattress you need or if you have medical conditions that need to be addressed.
Here are some problems that would indicate you should start shopping for a new mattress:
* When you sit down in the middle, does either side of the mattress flip up to make you feel like a sandwich?
* Does your mattress lump up when you put pressure on it like resting your upper body weight on your hands?
* Do you wake up feeling worse than when you went to bed with your body sore and stiff?
* Is your mattress older than the warranty on it?
Ok so now you’ve determined you need a new mattress set: (Some people only buy a mattress, but believe me you are only shortening the life of your mattress buy putting it on top of old box
springs.)
Here’s what to look for when shopping:
* Look for mattress sets with steel reinforced box springs. This will lengthen the life of the mattress.
* The number of coils in a mattress usually correspond with how much support the mattress will give you. A mattress with a 300 coils will not be as firm as one with 600 coils. A good average would be above 400 coils.
So if you want a real super firm mattress, 700 coils should do it.
* The gauge (thickness) of the coils will also make a difference in the type of support you will receive from your mattress. Do not be lured into buying a heavy gauge of coils but a low count in the mattress. This is what causes a mattress to become lumpy is not enough coils.
So you’ve made your choice, what other services should you expect from your retailer?
* Free delivery
* Removal of old mattress and box spring
* Free frame (even if it’s just one of those extension metal frames, it is most likely better than your present frame.)
* Some kind of comfort guarantee, where you can return it in 30 days minimum.
* If needed, free setup on the frame
Whether you get a twin, full, queen or king is a matter of personal preference. Some people don’t like bodies touching so a twin or king size would be the best for them. If you are the snuggly kind like my husband and I, the full size or queen would suit your needs.
One more thing, mattresses come in pillow top and plain top upholstery. There are many differences of opinion as if the pillow top adds to the comfort of the bed. Personally, I see and feel no difference.
