I had an Oster blender for many years--15 or more. It still works fairly well but it is starting to show its age and is difficult to clean. It has the narrow push buttons on the front of the machine that require cotton swabs to clean between. The top of the motor unit has a rim in which you fit the glass container. This is also difficult to clean in and around.
I wanted something new, something easy-to-clean, and with a little more power to it. I purchased the KitchenAid 5 speed ultra power blender this year.
I like its very powerful motor and heavy duty steel blades. They can crush ice in record time. This is perfect for making cool summertime drinks. It slices, dices, liquefies, purees, and blends anything in a flash.
It is designed with the motor sealed in a protective polymer body using sealed touch pads--not push buttons. These are easy to wipe down and keep clean.
It comes with a heavy duty glass container set in a large plastic collar. I was disappointed that the inside of the collar of the glass container is almost daisy shaped and fits on over the top of the motor drive which is also daisy shaped. The unusual shape makes it difficult to clean--a cotton swab for the edges is necessary. Nevertheless, overall it is still more durable and easier to clean than the other model.
The cover is circular plastic cover with 2 small caps for adding ingredients as you blend. It is heavy-duty, hard plastic with a thick gasket that screws onto the top of the glass container rather being inserted into the top like a cork. I sometimes have difficulty in securing the cap with the gasket. If it is not done correctly when the unit is turned on, liquid squirts up and out. Due to the power of the unit--wooossh!--the liquid gets all over the outside of the blender and the motor. This makes quite a mess.
If they improved the cover, this would be a better appliance. I've never had any fitting or leaking problems with rubber caps that fit into the top of the other units. KitchenAid should offer a rubber cap as well as the current cap. A simple design is sometimes the best.
