Bonne Maman is the maker of some of the best preserves that I have ever eaten-anywhere! They are made in France and are an example of what made the French famous for "confiture" (actually, they are preserves and not jam but my French is limited)! These preserves are stuffed with pieces of whole fruit-each mouthful is to die for (can you tell I like them?)! Not only do they make a great breakfast treat for you and your family, they are sufficiently "gourmet" and packaged such that they make a great addition to any breakfast gift basket you may put together. More about that later.
Bonne Maman makes preserves from the following fruits: wild blueberry, cherry, apricot, "four fruit" (combination of cherry, strawberry, red and black current), peach, raspberry and strawberry. They also make an orange marmalade, although I have never tried this one personally. Bonne Maman uses only natural ingredients, with fruit being the #1 ingredient in each of the preserves. The preserves also contain sugar, cane sugar, fruit pectin and citric acid. I don't think that I've ever had a preserve with a higher concentration of solid fruit in it than Bonne Maman! They couldn't seem more natural and wholesome. I love the "warning" note that they include on the label of the cherry preserves: "Our preserves are so full of hand picked cherries that occasionally a cherry stone escapes our vigilance and turns up in the jar. Our preserves are worth your vigilance too!" Actually, I did find a cherry stone in the preserves once (once in many years) but I look for them with every serving because the warning is so clever!
More good news: these preserves are available at most large grocery chains and sell for only $2.69 for a 13 oz. jar. Make no mistake, they are not a substitute for Welch's grape jelly if you need to make countless peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lots of kids. But they are perfect for a special morning treat!
Bonne Maman preserves also make a great addition to breakfast gift baskets for friends. They are packaged in short, stout, wide-mouthed jars which have red and white checked lids and the labels appear to be hand written in script. For a gift basket, include a jar with a few items like:
a small box of assorted breakfast teas,
a small bottle of special honey or maple syrup,
a package of fancy pancake mix,
a small package of "mix-and-bake" biscuits, and
a package of fancy (printed) napkins.
This makes a nice "take along" gift it you are going to stay with a friend, for a holiday treat for friends, etc. At $2.69 these preserves are a great value-they make a great impression too!
