Range or Cooktop? Big Price Difference!

Apr 17 '00

When I work with a person who is deciding whether to purchase a range or a cooktop and an oven, I always make certain the person understands these facts:

When you buy a cooktop and a built in oven, you will be spending more money than if you bought a top of the line range. When you buy a range, you can choose whether you want gas, electric and/or convection. You can purchase a self clean, gas burners, with an electric oven (called a duel fuel), with a clock and timer, broiler in the oven, drawer for your pots and pans where the broiler used to be. You can buy a range with a warmer on the top and a warmer drawer. You can purchase a range with the new flat top (easy clean), or a sealed burner gas range (so nothing falls down under the top), or an electric range. The dual fuel will cost you more money, as less of them are made. Still, for the entire self clean range with the broiler in the oven, clock/timer, all the extras, you should not need to pay more than between $499 and on up to whatever you believe you want to pay.

When you buy a cooktop, you have many choices, also. You may choose the gas, sealed burners type. Maybe you want an electric top. The electric cooktops start at about $200. . .these are very plain, with 4 burners. Gas cooktops cost a bit more, and if you opt for the sealed burners, expect to pay more. Most newer cooktops being put in are gas, with the sealed burners, or they are the electric type with the radiant or hallogen top. If you choose stainless look, you will be paying more.

The built in oven or ovens can start as low as $500, but, will be manual, as a rule. When the built in oven is a consideration, the space availability is a large concern. I would like to caution you not to even consider a 24" oven, as this size is almost non-existant, now, as new product, and can be expected to be not available in the near future. This means, if something goes wrong with the new 24" oven you put in, you will need the carpenter back out to put in a 27", at minimum, to replace it.

As far as style, you can purchase a very smart looking range for the price you will end up paying for the separate pieces. You can get more for your money buying the one piece range.

I strongly suggest that if this is a question you are deciding upon, at this time, that you find out just how much what you have in mind will cost you, and compare the two ways of going. If bending is painful for you, you may opt for the built in oven, as it doesn't require you bending over so much. Consider what you want, exactly, for your cooking needs. Then, price it out, consider the convenience, and consider how much it will cost you if you need to have a contractor redo your tile, counter top, drawer space, etc. in order to obtain what you are considering.

Personally, I prefer the range with all the frills rather than paying so much for a cooktop I prefer, and then a separate oven. Decide what you really expect to have when you are finished, draw it out, measure it out, price it out! Smart Shopping to you!
