Ask yourself...

Feb 14 '00

How hard am I going to be on this item. I determine if I'll buy a service plan based more on MY usage of the item rather than on how well I think the item is made. I figure, I wouldn't be buying it if I felt the product wouldn't hold up to normal use...but am I particularly rough on this item?

For instance, I bought a portable phone at Sears and they offered me a service plan for 2 years for $2.99. Now having owned one before and knowing how I use it, I jumped on that chance. I use the phone daily and it's always being dropped. My 2 year old has thrown it down the stairs, and once I saved it from him tossing it in the toilet by mear seconds. My last phone had a wire antenea, which they've improved greatly on, but I probably spent more money replacing that darn thing than I spent on the phone over the years.

Same with my portable CD player, laptop computer, and anything else "portable". If I can move it, I'll probably drop it. And most plans cover any damage even if it's user abuse. (Particularly from Sears.)

So again, ask yourself...is this something that sits in one place and isn't prone to being broken my me? Or is this something I need to protect from myself.

On large appliances, I suggest you read some of the other reviews here, they offer great advise.
