Food seasoned with cheap non-stick coatings!
Mar 08 '00
I have been washing dishes for over 35 years & there's nothing I hate more than to scrub a pot or pan! The thought of food so stuck on metal that I need to get out my Campbell Hausefeld air compressor & sand-blast the dried-on food has crossed my mind. But, there's got to be a simpler solution than that!
Non-Stick Cookware! Who ever invented this should be Canonized! What a wonderful invention. This is right up there with the Dish Washer!
Unfortunately there are a lot of companies that prey on the financially challenged, & sell sets of non-stick cookware for $9.99! (RiteAid Drug Stores for one) My daughter left our dual-income home & struck out on her own. We had Anolon pans. I gave her some Revereware to take with her. She discovered that pots & pans are easily ruined by roommates & she had to replace what she got from us. She bought a set of no-name non-stick cookware for only $9.99. Ha! She'd show us! She got non-stick for a fraction of the price we paid!
Oh boy did she get non-stick! After the first meal, she got it in her rice. She got non-stick in her vegetables. She even got non-stick in her entree! This 18 months ago. She is still alive, so I guess it wasn't fatal... That Christmas we bought her Tools of the Trade by Macy's. Not the price or quality of Anolon, but with a 50% sale, it was still 10 times more expensive than the pans she got from RiteAid. And they've lasted more than a thousand times longer than the ~$10 set did!
I would recommend that everyone have at least one non-stick frying pan. But, make sure that it's from a reputable manufacturer of pans. Short cuts usually end up costing more in the long run. A well-made non stick pan will last for years following these tips:
Use hard-plastic or wood utensils. There are even hard-plastic meat forks you can buy to turn frying meats & other large items.
Cure the pan after each washing. Whenever you use soap on a non-stick surface, pour a couple of drops of your favorite oil on to the surface & heat the pan. With a paper towel, spread the oil all over the non-stick surface. Wipe up excess oil (there shouldn't be much)
Don't put it in the dishwasher. Most companies recommend that you hand wash your non-stick pans. Since clean-up is easy, this shouldn't be a problem.
And finally; If you are having a family gathering, don't let your relatives use your pans to cook in! They Will use metal utensils and a dishwasher!
