We went out and got a microwave the other day after our 10 yr. old Panasonic Jr. bit the dust. After checking out features and looks and everything else on the 1.0 cu ft or so microwaves on the market today, we ended up with a white Panasonic model, the one with the temperature sensor.
It had pretty much what we wanted in it: a user interface that was easy enough to figure out for basic microwave functions, a handle on the front door instead of a push-button to open the door, and the right dimensions.
Unusual in this model was the presence of a special "bacon" key. Now I've seen popcorn keys on many models, and bacon instructions with lots of microwaves, but never before the front and center presentation of a separate key just for bacon. (We don't cook bacon in our microwave, so that will be one key that goes unpressed.) The only thing I could imagine was that the American Pork Producer's Council had paid some kind of slotting fee to Panasonic for the product placement.
The actual buying experience wasn't too bad, though it could have been easier in a lot of ways. Best Buy didn't have the model, ABC Warehouse didn't have very many microwaves at all and looked generally depressing inside, Circuit City had a good selection but again not this specific model in white. When we got home from day one of fruitless search I went onto epinions and looked up the details, found the mfgr's web page and the exact model number, and called Sears who had it.
Or...Sears thought they had it. We got to the store, bought the unit, went to the service desk to pick it up, and found that the inventory tally at the sales desk and at the warehouse were out of sync. They were keeping inventory at the sales desk on a piece of paper !!! (How 20th century) We ended up buying the floor model at 20% off the already discounted price and ended up with what looks like a really good machine for less than $100.
