Member Advice Summary
From an ex-mattress salesperson
by lakeshire | Nov 26 '00
Once upon a time I sold mattresses. All the major brands - Simmons, Serta, Sealy, etc. The brand is not important. I am not going to discuss brands, but tell you how to buy a mattress in the real world.

All of the major companies make a decent...

Keep It Simple (Reply to this comment)
by kdp000

I found this review to be extremely helpful.

Recently, I went to a mattress store and the more the salesman talked the more confused I became.

He went into this extremely complicated dissertation on coils and how they support the back. However, I could not get him to explain what made one bed better than another.

He also seemed to be steering me toward certain brands but would not explain why one brand was superior to another.

I suspected that they were all pretty much the same.

When I stated that I would like the exact name of the mattress, so I could research it on the Internet, he insisted that all I needed was the product number.

I own a mattress store and have been in the business for 15+ years. I applaud you for trying to help, but some clarifications are necessary.

The other comment about beds being bulked-up with cheap materials like inexpensive cotton batting was a good one, and I would never go by weight because of that.

Telling folks to avoid pillow-top mattresses is flat-out erroneous. They are some of the best customer satisfaction items we sell and fix what is the MOST often heard complaint which is, "the bed I bought is too hard". I'm sure you'd agree that is the predominant complaint after the purchase and the reason why most stores have 5x as many plush/pillowtop/eurotop beds as they do "hard" beds.

Better advice would be to avoid pocketed coils which offer almost no support. Another key point is that latex beds are some of the highest customer satisfaction products in our industry and many have no coils at all (great advice about avoiding coil counts as a determiner because it's largely a BOGUS measure when it comes to quality).

A lot of good info especially about the "name game" where they switch names from place to place.

My husband and I bought a set of Spring Air Kipling pillow top from Macy's a month ago. We both had very bad back pains the next day. Macy's is coming to pick them up this Saturday because we can't stand the mattress. Felt like sleeping on bricks!

Where is the best place to buy mattress? (Reply to this comment)
by charkleroad
My husband and I recently purchased Spring Air Back support (kiplington?) pillow top from Macy's. The next day, we called Macy's to return the mattress because we both developed very bad back pains after sleeping on them. Macy's told us to wait for 30 days to get used to them. While waiting, we bought a $200 foam pad to put on top of the mattress to make it softer to sleep on. Now, it has been 30 days, Macy's is coming to pick up the mattress, but charging us 10% cancellation fee.

We are back on the market searching for mattress again. Went to a Sleepy's store yesterday. The guy there was pushing hard to sell us a Kingstown. Went to another Sleepy's today. The guy at this store was pushing for Kingstown as well. We felt we couldn't trust the sales people at Sleepy's.

Any suggestions on where to buy mattress?
Thanks.

Single vs. double sided mattresses? (Reply to this comment)
by koelpien
This is a nice article, even for being five years old. However, things have changed a bit, and if the original author (if he's still around) could comment on the trend towards single-sided mattresses, and if they are of the same quality as a double-sided mattress. There is something appealling about not having to wrestle a mattress over every few months.

very good article. I just bought a thousand dollar piece of ^$%$% and now I am sleeping on the floor. I am hunched over like a pathetic vulture as I type this due to the pain my back. I bought a Spring Air Imagine...don't ever buy those. Wish there was a category for that so I can blast the damned thing to bits on epinions.

Very easy stuff to remember. I too was getting lost reading about tempered steel and coil diameter. And thanks for confirming my decision not to buy pillow top. :)

Nice help (Reply to this comment)

After reading reams of paper on how to buy a mattress I now have something I can remember. Coil counts, materials, warrenties all get muddled.
Thanks for the good advice.

Thanks for the Useful Information (Reply to this comment)
by meowzebub
It’s ridiculously hard to find information on how to comparison shop for mattresses. Consumerreports.org and consumercheckbook.org don’t have comparisons. After reading your comments, I can see why. How can you compare the same thing if it changes its identity with each different shop that sells it.

You’ve given me some valuable pointers. I probably would have fallen for a pillow top before I read your comments and I wouldn‘t have thought of lifting the corner to test the weight. Thanks for taking the time to share some of your knowledge.

This is the first article that told me what I was hoping to hear. Good information told with style! If an ex-mattress salesperson can't steer you in the right direction, no one can! Thanks.

Weight not necessarily always right way to find good bed. (Reply to this comment)
by klm1269
Many manufacturers of mattresses use cotton batting as an upholstry layer in their beds. It is the same thing that is used in futons, which have a history of compacting. Futons are very heavy as a result of using cotton, just as beds who use cotton batting in their upholstry layers are heavy too. In fact, 20 lbs or more of your bed's weight can come from cotton batting. Consumer Reports, after testing many brands came up with these comments, "sagging in a mattress is primarily a result of padding compacting, not springs going bad." One of two padding layers which they I.D.ed as compacting greatly was cotton batting, the other being polyester batting, which is often used in pillowtops and which also compacts quickly. This is why mattresses sag, or show body impressions. (nice words,"body impressions", it doesn't sound as bad as the word sagging, and yet it is the same thing.) So, yes you can go wrong with using weight as a parameter for purchasing a mattress.

Bedframes ... (Reply to this comment)
by big_guy571
For heavyset ppl such as myself the best option is to go to the lumberyard and pick up some 2x4's and make your own bedframe.

It only costs about $30.00 to make and is sturdier than almost any commercially made bedframe :)

Everything is a hustle... (Reply to this comment)
by andre98
Thanks for the insight. I love it when an insider turns "stoolie". It is sad that the consumer has to traverse a carnival midway of pitchmen with tempting promises and tricky catches whenever they make mid to big ticket purchases across many industries. The quality mattresses are items that may last 10 - 15 years or more, so it explains why bedding stores never seem to be bursting at the seams with customers.I may be in the market for one by years end, and I am heavyset, so I am aware so the value of not skimping with the cheapo stuff. In 16 years, we have replaced the bedframe (due to the weak wheels) twice, but our top line mattress has held up well.

weight/ quality (Reply to this comment)
by big_guy571
This holds true for a lot of other things too:
1: Major appliances, washers, dryers, stoves etc.
2: Tv's VCRs Stereo gear
3: Furniture to some extent, provided you are comparing the same type of wood.
4: Tools
5: Many other things although I can't think of any more at the moment.
Interesting that it applies to matresses as well

After reading what seems like hundreds of poorly written mattress reviews in the past week, it's very nice to read a well-written factual and informative review. I look forward to reading more of your posts.

I sure didn't know some of this....especially that they call the same ones different things at different stores. That is why I had such a good experience buying my mattress, after "designing" just what I wanted. I was SO mixed up after going to many stores with the name brands....
Great review,
