| bridgetcara's Full Review: Presto Powerpop Microwave Multi-Popper 4830 |
Last Christmas, a family member heard I was desperate for a popcorn fix but short on kitchen space. I didn't want a huge air popper, but I was sick of pre-buttered microwave popcorn bags.
The PowerPop was the perfect answer. It's small - I store it stacked with my mixing bowls, it's really simple to use, and it makes really good popcorn. I can pop in butter, in oil, or in neither depending on how good I feel like being, but the popcorn is all still good. The bowl itself is easy to clean (the base can't be immersed, but who gets the base dirty anyway?). The best part is, it leaves almost none of those unpopped or half-popped kernels that tend to blemish the bottom of a really good bowl of popcorn.
But there is a dark side to the PowerPop. It works by using small cardboard-y trays called concentrators, placed in the bottom of the bowl. It came with a package of these and claimed that each could be used several times. If you pop in oil or butter, you won't reuse this. Imagine wiping the butter and unpopped kernels off a piece of cardboard and putting it away for later. That's not something I want in my cupboard. Refills are available, but are pricey (since when you air pop, you only pay for the kernels). And at least around here, they are impossible to find.
So I'd recommend this product, but look for a source of refills before you buy, and then stock up.
