I love my medium length, thick, blond hair. Unfortunately, a couple of years ago when I wasn't looking it decided against my wishes to become extremely oily. It seemed no matter what I did, by the end of the night my hair looked like someone had brushed it with cooking oil. I have tried numerous products to try and deal with it. You could go in my bathroom and literally count at least 9 different half used shampoo bottles at any one moment. I've finally found the best way to deal with this. This is what works for me, your results may vary :)
The Three Shampoo's You Have To Have To Deal With Oily Hair.
Herbal Essences Clarifying/Residue Removal for Normal to Oily Hair. With Rosemary, Jasmine, and Orange Flower in Mountain Spring Water
This is the best shampoo I have ever found to deal with Oily hair year round. I use this one all the time because it always leaves my hair feeling incredibly soft and clean for a longer period of time then most shampoo's. It has this great floral citrus like smell and is a must have for anyone with oily hair.
Neutrogena Clean Balancing Shampoo for Normal Hair
This one is great in the summer after long hours in the sun. During the summer my hair tends to be a combination of extremely oily at the top on the scalp and extremely dry at the ends. This shampoo works perfect. It has this incredible rich sweet scent to it that lasts until your next
shampoo.
Neutrogena Shampoo Anti-Residue Formula
If you buy any shampoo's to help deal with this problem this has to be one of them. Even if you don't have oily hair this is a wonderful way to clean your hair. This shampoo will get your hair cleaner than anything you've ever used. After using it, it will make your other shampoo's work even better also because this cleans out all of the oil and residue! Most brands get most of the oil and residue, this removes all of it. It's about twice the price of regular shampoo's but you only use it once or twice a week and use your other shampoo the rest of the week. It smells a little bit like a medicine cabinet but will keep your hair virtually oil free for days. This thoroughly strips last bit of oil out of you hair and will leave it looking cleaner and healthier.
The Alternative Way to Manage Oily Hair
For those of you who don't have a quality shampoo meant for oily hair I'll let you in on a secret(ok. so it's not a secret but maybe you didn't know.) Vinegar is great for oily hair! Vinegar strips excess oils and dirt from your hair easily and throughly. My cousin told me about this and it really works wonders on my hair. plus you can buy a gallon for under $3. That could last you all year. I usually take a small measuring cup and pour a little of my shampoo into it. Pour only as much as you normal use. The add about a tablespoon of vinegar and mix together with your finger. Then just rub it into hair like you normally would. If our worried about you hair smelly like vinegar all day, don't! If you use a nice smelling conditioner afterwards the smell will be gone after your hair has completely dried .
Scalp Massage
In order to remove the most amount of oil possible from your hair I recommend a scalp massage. While shampooing massage your scalp using the pads on the tips of your fingers. Do not use your nails. Massage in a circular motion for about 3 to 5 minutes. I do this twice a week and it really improves the condition of my hair.
Conditioner
Use any light or daily conditioner as directed on the bottle. Then towel dry your hair as much as possible. I recommend using a blow dryer for no more than 10 minutes. This is extremely harsh on your hair and will increase split ends and that "fried" look. leave-in conditions can make your hair more managable, but they can also contribute to the "greasy" look you are trying to avoid
That Embarrassing Dandruff Problem
Because my hair becomes so oily, so easily, I end up with really bad dandruff during the winter. I have found that there is no point in paying and arm and a leg for expensive dandruff shampoo. Head and Shoulders Dandruff Shampoo for Oily hair works great. When I get dandruff I
switch this one back and forth with my regular shampoo until the flakes are gone. It doesn’t smell too much like a hospital, but you may want to use a strong smelling conditioner with this.
