Progressive International Rice Cooker

I am not nearly organized or gourmetically gifted enough to cook something of substance. Think about all of the steps involved...shopping lists, advanced preparation, boiling the water. Yes, even making white rice can be an ordeal for me. I usually either burn it or turn it into a gruel that even Oliver Twist would have refused to eat. I have even failed with traditional rice cookers.
But two weeks ago, my mother brought me a fail-proof gadget: The Progressive International Microwave Rice Cooker. I thought she was joking. Rice prepared in the microwave? Well...the promise of one-step rice was enough for me to give it a try.
The cooker comes with a measuring cup and appropriate rice: water ratio instructions. You dump the cold water and rice into the plastic cooker, place a sealant lid on the cooker, and then cover with the most superficial lid. Place the cooker into the microwave, and cook for the recommended amount of time. 1 cup of rice takes only 11 cooking minutes, plus five extra minutes once removed from the microwave.
As you remove the cooker from the microwave, you will be amazed at how safe the handling of this item is. Surprisingly, the outermost plastic does not become hot while cooking, allowing you to touch it without concern. The handles on the top of the cooker also allow for easy, fumble-proof transport.
Did mom score on this gadget? You bet! To my surprise, the rice turned out perfectly. It certainly was not burnt, nor was the fluid amount excessive. The rice was slightly sticky but also fluffy. All of the rice was easily removed from the container, with no "crusty" rice on the borders.
The cooker is an amazing time-saver. Not only can you prepare simple rice, but you can also add vegetables and seasonings before placing in the microwave. What a convenient route to a one-step meal! It is also a nice preparatory step when making fried rice.
Clean-up with the cooker is very simple. A little dishsoap on a warm-scrub pad does the job, a nice alternative to the soaking that is required by metal pots. Additionally, the water in the cooker doesn't spill over the brim of the lid, so your microwave will remain clean.
The microwave rice cooker is a very inexpensive and time-efficient tool that is ideal for cooking dummies like myself!
