Don't Get Wrung Out By the Wrong Washer!
Apr 15 '00
Put this in the category sad but true: I spend more hours a day with my washing machine than I do with my husband! If you are like me then it is critically important to ensure a good working relationship with your washing machine. Years of washing experience have given me some tips to finding a perfect machine.
1. Bigger is Better! If you have even a family of four, you will want to have a large capacity washing machine. A bigger drum means fewer fill ups and less time to complete the same amount of wash. If you opt for this larger size, just be sure to switch your dials when you wash smaller loads or you will feel the pinch in your water and electric bills. Quality machines will do a good job on most loads using cold water. Test yours and see before you put it on warm.
2. Bells and Whistles Don't Clean Clothes Some of the high end washing machines offer options that Martha Stewart wouldn't know what to do with. A washer needs a soak cycle, a permanent press cycle and a regular cycle for towels and really dirty laundry. A delicate cycle is also nice. Beyond that, it is all just in the way. Temperature settings should include hot, warm, and cold. All three will have a cold rinse, only the wash temperature is different.
3. Pick One that Can Be Serviced I personally have a Maytag-- you know, the reliability people. Think about it. If your car breaks down, you take it to the shop and get a loaner or a rental. Imagine the trouble you would go through if your washer stopped washing. Talk about inconvenient. Our family of four could spend four hours and and twenty bucks to take care of a weeks laundry at the laundry mat. Not to mention the fact that you are washing your unmentionables in the same washing machine as some total stranger! Go for the name brand or buy from Sears. This is one indispensable piece of property.
4. Front Loaders Are Cool if You Can Get'Em I wish I could afford a front loading machine. I have some friends who swear by them. They clean bigger loads, using less soap, less water, and less wear and tear on the clothes. Check out the ratings in Consumer Reports before you buy.
A washing machine is not just an appliance, it will be a vital member of your family so choose wisely. If you don't you may be high and dry or else all wet.
