I was eagerly awaiting the new 2001 model of the KitchenAid dishwasher. However, I was disappointed. I grabbed last year's KitchenAid model this week before they sold out. The newer model has a larger tub (24% larger); one look inside and I could see that this dishwasher can hold many more items; especially those large pans, platters, etc. The new model is more energy efficient; it uses 33% less energy.
So then, why did I go with last year's model? The door...on the new model it is somewhat difficult to close. It takes a good shove to get it latched. I tried all three display models at the store and they all resisted somewhat when they were closed shut. The salesman thought I was being picky when I pointed this problem out to him. The door closes fine, but not as easily as last year's model. I found it annoying to have to exert a bit of force to get the door to latch.
I ended up purchasing the KitchenAid Sculptura model (KUDG25SH). I got a good price because it is being discontinued (according to the salesperson). They still had the almond color in stock. (The new models do not offer almond as an option...instead, the biscuit color is available. Biscuit is slightly lighter than almond). The model I purchased is the least expensive KitchenAid dishwasher in the model line. Model #KUDI01TJ is the new model that is replacing the machine I purchased
Let me start by explaining the cons of this particular model dishwasher. It only has 3 cycles: Soak & Scrub wash, Normal wash, and Rinse only. It doesn't have a Light wash cycle. This isn't a big deal for me. I'll just use the Rinse cycle (10 minutes of rinse that uses 2.2 gallons of water) and then run a load after more dishes have been added. Second, it isn't as quiet as the more expensive model KitchenAids. How do I know?...I read some of the other reviews here on Epinions before I bought this dishwasher. Those reviews tell about how some machines can barely be heard. This machine is more quiet than the 17-year-old Whirlpool it replaces, but it still can be heard. I would not want to talk on the phone while standing next to this machine while it was cleaning...it wouldn't be loud, just somewhat distracting The salesman told me that more sound-proofing is used with the more expensive models. Finally, this model does not have an upper spray above the top rack. I don't really see why it is needed. The dishes/glasses all come out clean.
So, why do I like this machine? First, I got a good price: $449.00. Second, cleaning ability is first-rate. Other features that make it superior to other brands are that it doesn't have a center post on the bottom of the tub. This makes it easier to load, and more items can fit. KitchenAids have a lower spray with 4 arms (versus 2 arms with other brands). The silverware basket can be placed in different areas of the the bottom rack. It isn't in the door (like some brands). Stainless steel interior...it looks so cool!
KitchenAid was the only brand I considered when shopping for a dishwasher. I bought a discontinued KitchenAid model that wasn't "top-of-the-line" and am not disappointed. I think it deserves a rating of 5, but am giving it a 4 because the noise level is slightly higher than some may want. I cook a lot and use my dishwasher a lot (sometimes two or three times a day). The added tub room of the new model was hard to pass up. Hopefully the KitchenAid people will fix the door on future models so it closes with less effort.
