Rotary pulled, foil soothed

Jun 01 '00

I have been using various electric razors since I was given my first one by my parents when I was 14. My first razor was a Norelco rotary, and I was quite excited to get it, not only because I couldn't wait to shave (every other week), but also because I loved those Christmas Norelco ads with the razor cutting a path through the snow.

My early experiences with this rotary were horrible…the rotary pulled my hairs out instead of cutting them, I had terrible razor burn and my already acne filled face had an increase in eruptions due to the dreaded "ingrown hair" syndrome.

I suffered quite a while with this, until I finally decided to try a foil razor (Braun). The shave was closer, the hairs were cut instead of pulled, but I still suffered with the ingrown hairs. What finally aided me was a suggestion by my uncle…apply baby powder to your face before shaving.

This little trick has worked wonders. The razor glides smoothly over my face, and I have many fewer problems with ingrown hairs. The downside is, of course, that the cutting element becomes dull quicker.

I did attempt the powder with the rotary, and it seemed to work a bit better, but only if I was trying to clean-up a five-O'clock shadow. When my hairs were longer (shaving in the morning) I still experienced the dreaded hair-pulling instead of the cutting.
