The holy grail of tools

May 17 '00

I am a homeowner and have done dozens of home projects, from new windows, screen porch, hardwood floors, ceramic tile, skylights, etc. First off, believe in yourself. You can do more than you think. Don't be paralyzed by the unknown. Information is power. Second, get a few essential tools. These are the following: 1)Sabre saw(jigsaw) for cutting all directions, 2)portable 10" table saw, for straight cuts, 3) circular saw for long cuts on sheets of plywood, etc, and 4) rechargeable drill, 9.6 amps minimum, and 4)a Sawzall. All of these tools will cost you about $350 total. But with these tools I have made about $60,000 of improvements to my home for less than $10,000 which would have cost me 40,000 to have someone else do. That's a pretty good return, not to mention the empowerment and satisfaction of doing something yourself. There is no sicker feeling than being dependant on contractors to fix or improve your property, and you only being able to write the check. Once you have done a few projects yourself, you will realize there is logic, but little magic involved, which will encourage you to do more, and help you to evaluate the cost and value of those projects you still need to hire out. So, start with small project, but start!
