To Sew or Not to SewApr 23 '00 Write an essay on this topic.Believe it or not, my first sewing machine was given to me when I was a sophomore in high school! That was almost 50 years ago! It was a top of the line zig-zag model that had cams for fancy stitches. That machine lasted over 40 years. It was all metal except for the cams. All those years ago the sewing machine and limed oak cabinet cost $350. Maybe that is why it lasted so long. I did a lot of sewing with that machine. In college I sewed most of my clothes except for coats and underwear. As a new mother, I sewed many baby clothes, draperies, curtains, and maternity clothes. From there I discovered quilting on the machine. I made dust ruffles for beds, place mats, table cloths, you name it. Finally it stopped working. The parts were no longer made. Reluctantly I bought a new machine. It was a school model so it is rugged and made mostly of metal. It has a few built in fancy stitches and zig-zag, and it has the open arm for sewing sleeves and pants legs. It makes buttonholes with ease. It is portable which makes it easy to carry around, store, or take to friends' homes to make projects. Newer machines need not cost that much. Just like computers, the first ones were expensive. My old machine was probably one of the first fancy stitch machines. Now that is old hat. Prices come down except for computer driven models and embroidery machines. I still miss my old machine because of the memories and keep the cabinet as a table, but the new machine is easier to use and should last a long time. It was only $200 plus case and I bought a ruffler for $15. Unless you are sewing a lot, I would recommend the portable. Also, buy the electronic motor that sews over all thicknesses of fabrics without adjustments. You can spend a lot more, but unless you sew a lot, don't get caught up in all the fancy frills that just add to the cost. Try the machine yourself before deciding. Look at the stitches on top and under the fabric to see how even they are. Ask about lessons or support if you are a beginner. Get the best basic machine you can and you will not be sorry. Because the heading of the category said not to name brands, I did not, but if you want to know what they were, look at the comments after this opinion. |
