Popcorn Popping--Pop Pop Pop!!
Written: Mar 13 '00
Pros:makes great popcorn
Cons:none
I was looking for a hot air popcorn popper. I looked and looked and could not find one anywhere!! The only popcorn popper I saw was the Presto Power Pop which pops corn in the microwave. I had my doubts!!
But, I was in for a great surprise!! This thing actually worked!! And the popcorn it makes turns out just like the air popped popcorn and it is a whole lot easier too. My hot air popper always got jammed up (and therefore burnt out the motor hence the reason I was looking for a new one!). This can not and will not jam up!! The hot air popper always left unpopped kernels. The Power Pop pops almost every kernel!!
I personally like the taste of hot air popped popcorn with no butter or seasonings and this popper will pop popcorn that way. If, however, you like popcorn popped in oil and/or with salt, you can use it that way too.
To pop "hot air style" popcorn, all you do is to attach the base to the bowl, insert a "power cup concentrator" into the bowl, add 1/3 cup of popcorn, put the top on and put it in the microwave. I experimented with times and it takes about 2 1/2 minutes in my microwave to pop the popcorn.
To make popcorn popped in oil, you do the same thing except that you add a couple of tablespoons of oil. If you add oil, you can then add salt as well because it will stick. It will not stick to air popped popcorn because there is nothing to make it stick (oil).
The popper comes with 8 "power cup concentrators" and you can buy more. They only cost me $1.50 at WalMart or you can order them directly through Presto but it costs a little more because of shipping and handling charges. Each concentrator lasts for 12-24 "pops". They last longer if you do not use oil.
The way I figure it, this Popcorn Popper is saving me money. Microwave popcorn is expensive. Already popped popcorn is expensive. I can buy a pound of popcorn kernels for less than $1 and it makes many, many batches of popcorn. With each concentrator lasting me 24 "pops", each time I pop popcorn, it costs me less than a penny for the concentrator. Air popped popcorn is also very nutritious and low fat (which is a lot more than I can say for most microwave and already popped popcorn)! It makes a great snack.
This popcorn popper couldn't be easier to use. The see-through bowl makes it easy to see popcorn popping and it can also be used a serving bowl! And the top is perfect for storage if you don't finish the whole bowl of popcorn at once. (Though if you plan to store it for a longer time, I would suggest a zipper seal bag to keep it really fresh.) The whole thing is easy to clean. Just wipe the bowl clean with a damp sponge! If you do use oil, you can detach the base and submerge the bowl in soapy water to clean if necessary.
I am very happy with this popcorn popper and would recommend it to everyone who likes popcorn.
