Dorm 'Fridges: We need cold too

Jan 25 '00 (Updated Feb 09 '00)

Most people seem to forget that college students and other various members of society don't have families and don't need large refrigerators. The fact is, that it is just as difficult, if not more, to buy a good small fridge. For instance when buying for a single person you have to remember that 6 cubic foot fridges will never cut it. I don't care how little you want to put in there, they dont hold anything, a gallon of milk, sorry, they wont even hold a quart.

It works like this, there are certain mechanical elements inside of a refrigerator that will take up roughly the same amount of space no matter what model you buy. So if you buy a very small fridge(6 cf), your ratio of mechanical-fridge(what you pay for) to space is much higher (say 3cf to 3cf) than that of a larger fridge (say 4cf to 6cf). Ok so what, you have no idea what I'm talking about. Just take my word that the larger the fridge, the more the value.

How does that apply for small fridges, well it means you have to find the best medium between size and value...6 cf means your getting ripped off while as 10-12 cf is an ok deal. (of course if you run by and grab one while someone is moving in then value is out the door)

As for practicality, nothing but ketchup packets (which can be meals in a pinch) and six packs ever fits in a 6 cf fridge. Keep in in mind that its short frame is split in half by a shelf and it is very shallow due to the gizmos I speak of. I know from time tested experience. On the other hand a 10 cf will hold a full tray of jello shooters, tons of pre-mixed drinks, a 2 liter bottle of vodka, and a full 12 pack box of beer. Now ask yourself, "what fridge do I wanna buy for my son?"

There is one more point that may influence a good dorm fridge and that is college regulations. Some colleges don't allow more than an 8 cf, in which case the decision should be easy, buy an 8 cf, but its NOT that easy. You may also need to hide the fridge from your nosy RA or tatle tale neighbors...after all, so much booze can breed suspicion. This is the only advantage to having a smaller fridge, cause gawd knows you can't put your phat 40 in there.

by the way, I now live in an apartment with a full size fridge and let me tell ya, I don't know how most people survive alcohol poisoning with these things.
