Make Sewing enjoyable.

A new sewing machine purchase is something that you need to prepare for prior to going to the store and being "pounced" on by a salesperson who could care less about your wants or needs.
Depending on how advanced a sewer one is should determine the type of machine purchased. Beginners don't overwhelm yourself! A simple zig-zag, stretch stitch, free arm is all you will need. This will do the trick until you are ready for a Serger.
Start with a simple project to learn the ropes with your new machine. I think the most important feature for a new machine is the stretch stitch. With the types of fabric being used today it ready helps to have this stitch which stretches with the fabric, so it doesn't break.
If you intend to sew for little ones in the family then the free arm style is a must. This allows the top of the sewing area to come off leaving a smaller area to rotate tiny armholes, necklines and pant legs. Makes it so much easier to do.
Stay away from a machine that is geared towards a expert sewer. Just threading a Serger the first time is enough to make you take it back to the store.
Stay with a model which is geared towards your sewing level and this will help to keep the sewing experience enjoyable. Practice is what one needs to do and with plenty of that the confidence level will increase and soon you'll be impressing yourself.
