Service and Quality, The Keys To Purchasing a New Dryer

Apr 03 '00

I don't want to sound like I am overstepping my bounds here but having been in the appliance business for 12 years I have found some information that might be useful in the purchasing of appliances. I also know a few things about the quality and reliability of certain brands.
While shopping for some appliances may be difficult, buying a new dryer is possibly the simplest of tasks if you remember 2 things. A dryer heats up and a dryer tumbles. As long as it does these 2 things your clothes will get dry! Everything else you look for in a dryer will only increase the cost.
Now if all you need is the basic model, most any brand will do.
I recommend either the Roper model or the Crosley model. You will find that these are going to most probably be your least expensive brands. Also you may be interested to know that the Roper brand is made by Whirlpool and that the Crosley brand is made by Maytag. By going with these you are basically getting that quality at the lower price. These 2 companies build these lower end models to compete in that market while making the more expensive name brands with more features to draw in the bigger bucks when going for the higher income clientele.
Now if you are wanting the bells and whistles, more specifically the warning buzzer, the multiple temperature settings, etc... you will find that the Whirlpool, Maytag, and Kenmore brand may be more to your liking.
Each of these carries a multi-year warranty and has proven reliability with a decent service department should any problems arise.
Now lets address the place you purchase your new dryer. Obviously you are going to want to shop around for the best price but you might also want to consider service as well. Ask the salesperson who takes care of any service problems. Will they arrange the service call? Will they provide you with something to use while your dryer is in the shop? Another good question is will they haul away your old dryer if you need them to do so? Its possible you might want to pay a little more if these questions are answered to your satisfaction by the more expensive place. I am a firm believer in you get what you pay for but if all things are answered equally might as well save a buck or two.
In closing I hope this little bit of info is of service to you and wish you the best in your shopping.
