Be Prepared!

If you are getting ready to register a domain and get a website hosted, you should do a lot of research before making any purchase. If you prepay for a year's hosting, and find that the service stinks and you need more webspace or more bandwidth, you're sort of stuck. Most places will allow you to upgrade your service, but you'll end up paying way more than you had bargained for.

Determine How Much Web Space You Will Need

If you are making a site that contains basic graphics and text, then you may only need a small amount of web space (at least 20 megs or so). However, if you plan on hosting a lot of large files for download, like mp3s, videos, zip files, etc - you will need a lot more space.

POP Email

Different web hosting companies offer different options for POP email. Some allow you up to 10 accounts, some only one account, some give you unlimited. Chances are, the more expensive the hosting - the more email boxes they will allow you to have.

If you are operating a small company or small website, then you may only need two or three mailboxes. Personally, I prefer to use web-based email, like Hotmail.com, because I can access it from anywhere.

Bandwidth

Some sites advertise "X number of megabytes transferred per month". This basically means that your website can have X amount of data downloaded from it, before they start charging you extra. This is a matter of bandwidth. If you plan on making a site which hosts a lot of downloads, or you think will be a high-traffic site, you should definitely find a host that offers unlimited traffic.

Options

Are you planning on doing any web-based databases? If so, you'll need to find a host that supports ASP. Do you need your own cgi-bin folder to run scripts and such? Determine every function of your site, planned or not, and then determine the features you will need to look for. If you want to sell banner ads, web traffic reporting is a must.

Finally, The Price

Don't let yourself get screwed by a hosting place. I've found that most ISP's charge an arm and a leg for hosting. 50 bucks a month for 20 megs is a total ripoff. You can get 40-50 megs of web space for less than 12 dollars per month. Search around, and definitely read the hosting reviews on epinions before making a choice.
