Analog vs. Digital-Which Recording Is Better

Oct 26 '00

There are a vast number of differences when you are considering the type of recording you would like to do. Digital or Analog each offer their own sound quality, cost is always a factor, and you may want to consider what kind of effects it can add to your music.

Analog is the cheaper of the two systems but if you don’t mind spending a few hundred dollars more you will be in the Digital price range easily. The price of Analog tape is about three times as expensive as Digital so that might be a factor as well. Using a Digital machine will give you a much better reproduction of what you are recording. If you use Analog it has a tendency to modify the sounds of guitars.

Almost every studio uses Digital today so you may want to consider this if you are planning on showing your music off to others. The same is not always true with Analog. It is possible to daisy chain Digital machines so that you can increase the amount of tracks you can record that is a great advantage. You can chain with Analog as well but there is a lot more work to be done that way.

Analog recordings will degrade over time while Digital remains the same. You will also notice that there is a small amount of background noise whenever you hear Analog while Digital is crystal clear when you listen.

Overall I would suggest Digital over Analog!
