I've been in a few bands in my life time. Some were a success but ended for various reasons, and some were short lived and just flat out chaotic!I'll tell you about the chaotic situations since it will only lead to why a few of my bands were some what successful, even if on a local level. When you start or join a band, you have to realize that not only will you be 'hanging out' with these people, but also working with them! First and foremost, you have to like them and have something in common with them MORE than just the music. You will be spending quite a bit of time with these people, to the point where they will be like a 2nd family! A good question to ask yourself would be "Would I be able to stomach a 6 hour road trip, stuck in the same van as these people?" If you don't see that as being some what fun, then BAIL! Its like being trapped in a tiny cell with 4-5 other people with no escape! Could you all make the experience fun and get through it together? Or would you all end up ripping each others throats out after the first 2 hours? Seems like a silly hypothetical question, but trust me, it works! Also, you can like someone but not necessarily want to be around them all that much. I love my mother, but god, after one afternoon with her, I'm ready to go home and not endure the experience again for another month! Same thing with band mates. You have to really enjoy their company, like them as people, and care about them! There has to be a unity there or else you are just going to be biting your tongue, chewing your finger nails and in the end, not having that much fun. There is enough to cause tension in a band, with out having to deal with 'personality conflicts' on a regular basis. No one will get a long a hundred percent of the time, but you have to be able to get a long like close friends. All the successful bands that I know of in my area, are all close knit.
