Yes, your music may sound great. You may have a well produced CD. And you actually have some paying gigs. But nobody knows about you.
PR is key to any band. What does PR consist of? A few points:
1. A well engineered press kit.
2. Attention to detail
3. Follow up
1. A well engineered press kit. Nothing is cheap in this world, but if you want a music editor of your area media to take you seriously above the 300 local band press kits sitting in a pile on their desk, a well engineered press kit is essential. Clean copies of your bios, an up to date gig calendar, and even a copy of the CD enclosed (trust me, I've had bands send me a kit with no CD...) Spend a few extra bucks on decent photocopies. Someone in the band must have a computer and can type out what you need. Also, make sure this person also has and knows how to use spelchek, spellcheek, um...spell check!
2. Attention to detail. Take the time to call the local media and find out who the proper person is to send your materials to. Usually you won't talk to that person directly, but the person at the front desk can handle giving you the right name. There's almost nothing more annoying than someone in the media receiving a package addressed to the person who held the job three people before him/her.
3. Follow up. A quick phone call to the people you sent the kit to within two weeks or so, just to make sure they received it, and whether or not they're going to do anything with it. Either way, a polite thank you is always in order.
And on a side note, as someone who deals with local/unsigned musicians on a regular basis for radio: a personal pet peeve. When I get a CD that doesn't have a song run time after each song is sure to meet the hopper in a heartbeat. I shouldn't have to guess how long your songs are - you should make it clear on the back of the CD or inside the jacket the run time on all the songs.
