Heroin and gigs don't mix...

Nov 02 '00

Worst gig? Sure, my bands have experienced all the phenonema that make for bad gigs - equipment failure, too drunk to play, shows in front of 3 people, getting attacked by bar owners and their friends, etc., but I think what takes the cake is when the band in ready to rock in front of a huge crowd and for some reason doesn't get to play.

This happened to my punk band the Suffocated back in 1993 or so. We had a good show booked at a major club in Seattle that was tough to get into, and we were all excited and ready to rock the house.

A large crowd showed up to see the show, and we were stoked. We were the headliners of the evening, slated to play at Midnight, so our bass player Scrotum (yes, I'm naming names) decided to go home with his girlfriend for a couple hours after we had loaded in. He said he was going to "chill"... boy, did he ever.

The show was going great - good crowd, good bands opening up - until we received a phone call from a friend of Scrotum's - said that Scrot O.D.'d on heroin and was in the hospital... obviously, we had to cancel the show at the last minute.

After the first two bands had played, everyone left the club, upon hearing of our misfortune. The "funny" thing is that our bass player showed up at the club 10 minutes before midnight - he had been released from the hospital and showed up hoping we didn't know anything about his O.D.

We ended up throwing him out of the band on the spot. We told him, "If you're going to do heroin, at least have the courtesy to O.D. after the gig!" That was the last show the Suffocated ever booked. We never could agree on a new bass player, so that ended up being the last show for that band. On the bright side, we still got our free drink tickets, and an old girlfriend of mine I hadn't seen in years showed up, so I guess the night wasn't a total waste...
