Starting a band: Practice Practice Practice

Sep 12 '00

I have been playing music for about 7 years now. I have been in bands since I was a sophmore in highschool, which was 4 years ago. There are many things that it takes to start a band and be successful.
First off you have to have dedication. You have to be dedicated to doing whatever it takes to get the band out there and to get your sound heard. You have to be dedicated to practicing every chance you get. It's an old saying but, practice makes perfect. The more you practice the better you are going to get. You're song writing will become better and better. The band will start to sound more together and most of all it'll be fun. At least it was and still is for me. I have more fun every time I jam with the band I'm in now.
One of the most important things I think that goes into being in a band is that you have to have a real heart and be passionate about what you're singing about. Unless you are just in it for the heck of it and just write silly songs. I am speaking from the view point of the majority of bands that I have been in. If you don't have passion and really believe what you sing about nobody will pay attention to you. For example: Rage Against the Machine, now they have determination and they are really passionate about what they believe and about what they're band is all about. Now, I'm not saying you have to be just like Rage Against the Machine but, that was just one example.
There are downsides to being in a band. You have to realize that if you go on tour then you will be away from home and from your friends and your life for however many weeks or months you will be gone. If you don't like being away from home for long periods of time I would suggest just staying local or whatever. I also believe that all the band members should be able to get along. On tour you will be with these people for 24 hours a day. If you can't get along then don't go on tour.
Being in a band like everything, has it's pros and cons. You just have to decide whether the pros out weigh the cons for you. I hope that my opinion has helped you in some way.
